Why Markets Have Been So Volatile

Recent volatility in the markets - the S&P 500 has moved more than 1 percent on the 8 of 16 trading days in February - is difficult to reconcile with the tiny fragments of economic data so far suggesting higher inflation. However, the volatility makes more sense when we consider where we are coming from, with low inflation persisting throughout the last 9 years. 

Through that lens, it becomes clear that recent volatility is not about investors"expecting" higher inflation, it is about investors, for the first time in a while, considering the risk that higher inflation will come - a still wholly unclear, but potentially costly, outcome.
