Detecting B.S.

Markets

In the digital age, misinformation—from nonsense to lies—spreads faster than ever and is becoming an area of serious research.

These days, people must be able to spot false information on the web. Fake news has been a hot topic lately. Now, researchers are attempting to quantify when and why people spread it, who is susceptible to it, and how people can accost it.

What exactly is B.S.? B.S. is a form of persuasion that aims to impress the listener while employing a blatant disregard for the truth. You are probably wondering how B.S.ing differs from lying. Liars intentionally disregard the truth while B.S.ers do not necessarily care about the truth at all.

This is only relevant because false information is spreading faster and farther than ever before. Social media has propelled fake news forward.

Fake news was a pivotal point in the 2016 presidential election. It influenced many to accepting falsehoods. It is now more important than ever to detect the falsehoods so you will not be fooled.

These are the following ways to detect B.S.:

  • Always check the news source
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is
  • Ask plenty of questions
  • Do not trust your gut
  • Ask for evidence
  • Pay attention to those who discount evidence
  • Avoid the internet when you are tired.

It is pertinent to be a B.S. detector in the digital age or else you will be fooled.
